The Challenge:
Create a web based system that would integrate into a full fledged smart card based transaction system. The project included a turnkey contract for deciding technologies, sourcing hardware and smart cards and creating a full web based management system.
The Solution:
We first sourced point of sales smart card terminals from Korea that fitted our needs. The terminals would authenticate the smart card using a combination of smartcard data and a secret PIN. This terminal could be used for dual purposes, loading of money into the card by paying the retailer and making purchases using the value of money loaded on the card. The system would store all the data in it for synchronization that would be done at off-peak hours.
At the client's head office we setup a server that would use a modem bank to accept synchronization requests from various retail stores. The database had a record of each unique smart card machine identifier against the retailer. This system would therefore store the transaction details against the retailer. This was then used to make a comprehensive set of calculations for various purposes. This included calculating the total payables/receivables from the retailer depending on the amount of loading/purchases made at his terminal. A complicated loyalty program that would add money to end user's account based on his spending and deduct a commission from the retailer for referring customer. There were various levels of logins for accountants who would make entries of cheques issued/received. A login for retailers to check their transactions, a login for end users to check their card balance and online statements. A login for super admin / senior management, who would see the 'larger picture' in terms of trends and overall progress and cumulative reports on performance.
